Its Monday! What are you Reading? (7th May)

7 May

Its Monday! What are you Reading? is a weekly bookish meme held on Book Journey by Sheila. It’s a great place to discuss your week in reading 🙂 I didn’t get a chance to take part last week as i was suffering with the flu, but im all better now 😀

Books Read

Over the last week i finished two books. The first i finished was a book on my kindle, A Flicker of Light by Roberta Kagan.  This was a book set in Nazi Germany and centred on a girl who had to live through the regime. This book is quite shocking, mainly due to the fact that this could have been true. There were so many heartbreaking points and it really illustrated what it could have been like to live there. The cover of the book is really beautiful too.

The second book i finished was I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith. This was the choice for the May reading circle over on the BCF and i have to say I’m so pleased that i have finally read this book. It is up there with one of my favourite books ever and it will be going on my keep shelf. It is a brilliant book.

Reading Now

In book form I’m reading Apocalypse Cow by Michael Logan. I got this book from the publisher Transworld, who sent this copy to me to early review. The book is out this week so I’m reading it now. I’ve not read all that much of it yet, but I’m liking it so far!

On my kindle I’m currently reading Ellie Foster’s English Coursework by Tina Orr Monro. I downloaded this as it was free for a day on amazon and it is very enjoyable. It takes the form of a teenage girls diary, its been compared to The Diary of Adrian Mole by some, and its a really good YA book!

Next up

Next up is a book off my TBR pile, a book that probably everyone else in the world has read but i havent. Next up off my TBR is Twilight by Stephanie Mayer. I wasnt at all interested in this book when it came out, Team Jacob, Team Edward, Team who cares? But I’ve seen the movies (a rarity for me!) so I’ve decided to try to read the book.

Synopsis –When 17 year old Isabella Swan moves to Forks, Washington to live with her father she expects that her new life will be as dull as the town.

But in spite of her awkward manner and low expectations, she finds that her new classmates are drawn to this pale, dark-haired new girl in town. But not, it seems, the Cullen family. These five adopted brothers and sisters obviously prefer their own company and will make no exception for Bella.

Bella is convinced that Edward Cullen in particular hates her, but she feels a strange attraction to him, although his hostility makes her feel almost physically ill. He seems determined to push her away – until, that is, he saves her life from an out of control car.

Bella will soon discover that there is a very good reason for Edward’s coldness. He, and his family, are vampires – and he knows how dangerous it is for others to get too close.

Books Brought

I brought one book last week, The Crimson Petal and the White by Michel Faber. This is another book that ive heard loads about but have never read. The only thing i have putting me off about this book is that it is massive!

Synopsis – Step into Victorian London and meet our heroine, Sugar – a young woman trying to drag herself up from the gutter any way she can – and the host of unforgettable characters that make up her world.

So, What are you Reading?

I loved the Crimson Petal and the White. It’s one of the most authentic historical novels I’ve ever read. Hope that you enjoy it, too–savor it!

I read and enjoyed the Crimson Petal (I tend to like historical fiction) but I loved Capture the Castle! And I haven’t read Twilight yet either 🙂

You have a lot going on, what a fun meme, I might have to participate next week. 🙂 I just finished The Kingdom by Amanda Stevens which I totally loved and have just started Dead Man’s Hand, which is fun – vampires in 1906 San Francisco with the big earthquake just pages away…

I haven’t read Twilight either, it is on my TBR list. However, every time I pick it up I find something more interesting to read.

You’ll be disappointed by Twilight. Leaving aside teams and sparkly vampires, the movies were truly far better than the books. I find Mayer to lack any writing talents whatsoever.
I finished reading Catching Fire and done with Mockingjay too. All in like..6 hours hehe. Now I just have to read The Postman Always Rings Twice.

    • shelovestoread May 8, 2012 at 7:40 pm #

thats a shame, i do keep hearing that twilight is like marmite, you either love it or you hate it, so it will be interesting to see which way i end up going!

I need to read The Hunger games series too, but The Postman Always Rings Twice sounds good 🙂

      • cleverpretender May 8, 2012 at 9:29 pm #

I can’t wait to finish it and see the movie..again!
Oh yeah, Twilight. It’s definitely touch and go. You either love the characters and story from the start or grow more and more annoyed with them.
        Good luck 😛 and enjoy.
