The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas – John Boyne *Reading Challenge Recap*

31 Oct

Challenges – #3/691 Ultimate Teen Book Guide, #3/782 Ultimate Teen Book Guide 2nd Edition.

Synopsis – Nine-year-old Bruno knows nothing of the Final Solution and the Holocaust. He is oblivious to the appalling cruelties being inflicted on the people of Europe by his country. All he knows is that he has been moved from a comfortable home in Berlin to a house in a desolate area where there is nothing to do and no one to play with. Until he meets Shmuel, a boy who lives a strange parallel existence on the other side of the adjoining wire fence and who, like the other people there, wears a uniform of striped pyjamas.

Bruno’s friendship with Shmuel will take him from innocence to revelation. And in exploring what he is unwittingly a part of, he will inevitably become subsumed by the terrible process.

My original thoughts from back in 2012 can be found here.

Challenges – 1001 Children’s Books You Must Read
Ultimate Teen Book Guide Challenge

Synopsis – The story of The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas is very difficult to describe. Usually we give some clues about the book on the cover, but in this case we think that would spoil the reading of the book. We think it is important that you start to read without knowing what it is about. If you do start to read this book, you will go on a journey with a nine-year-old boy called Bruno. (Though this isn’t a book for nine-year-olds.) And sooner or later you will arrive with Bruno at a fence. We hope you never have to cross such a fence

My Thoughts – this has got to be the saddest book that i have read this year. I dont want to say too much about this book as i dont want to give anything away, but if you havent read this you must! A fantastic book that makes you think about a different perspective about events of the second world war.

Rating – 5/5
