Summer Reading List

Best Commenter Award

28 Jun

I was given this award a couple of weeks ago by Katy over on Katy Brandes Writes. I’m so thrilled to get this award as i love Katy’s blog. She reads the same sort of books as me and has a lovely blog!

The creators of this award hope it will catch on, and that everyone will display the badge proudly on their own blogs.

The Dodisharkicon, nature’s fiercest beast, does not issue approval lightly. By being offered this terrific honor, he is signifying that you are allowed to continue reading and commenting without fear of attack. Failure to pass on this award will result in the dodisharkicorn letting loose his terrible battle squawk/whinny to the tune of the Jaws theme song, and all that you love will turn to glitter.

Aren’t there always rules with these things? OF COURSE THERE ARE! The rules are the same as the rest of them, but we have better questions.

Accept Dodisharkicorn award and display it proudly in your widget sidebar.
Find your “Top Five Commenters” on your Stats page and present them with the award. If they really comment that frequently, you shouldn’t need to tag them because they’ll see it anyway. It’s just polite to link to their blog, though. Dur. We are ALL ABOUT politeness.

Answer the following questions and pass them on to your Top Five Commenters.
The Questions

What is your third favorite color? My third favourite colour is purple. The two before that are Pink and Yellow.

Would you rather be: a Jedi, a Pokemon Master or a Wizard/Witch? I would like to be a witch, but a nice kind like Hermionie Granger from the Harry Potter series.
Who is your favorite Doctor?  eeekkk geek moment! The only thing that popped into my mind just now was Dr Who. My all time favourite Doctor is Matt Smith, followed by David Tennant. From the old series it has to be John Pertwee.

Can you whistle?  Yes, but not very well 😦

Would you name your child Sirius Albus? No, but i would name a child Albus Sirius. I just think that Sirius is a name that is always said and spelt wrong.
What is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything?  Do what makes you happy, not what makes others happy.
Do you own a lawnmower?  I dont even own a house, let alone a lawnmower!
Do you think Legolas is a (very pretty) pansy? I dont think hes a Pansy, but he is very pretty!
What’s the trashiest thing you’ve read in the last year? I dont tend to read a lot of trashy books, however, I’ve heard that the 50 Shades of Grey books are pretty bad!

…And to these top commenters (thank you, ladies), I pass along the award:

Now for some reason only these three people are showing up on my stats at the minute. Will try again to see if i can see others later 🙂

WWW Wednesdays (27th June)

27 Jun

WWW Wednesdays is a weekly meme held over on Should be Reading. To play along just answer the following questions.

I’ve been absent from this meme for a couple of weeks because of life getting in the way but im back now to get reading and blogging again.

What are you currently reading?

In book form I’m currently reading I Know You Got Soul by Jeremy Clarkson. He is one of my favourite celebrities as he doesnt care what he says and is very outspoken. This book is basically his views on a lot of things and so far its good.

On my kindle I’m currently reading Just A Kid, A Guard at the Nuremberg Trials by Emilio DiPalma. This book is basically what it says in the title. I love all things world war two, so I’m really enjoying this book too.

What did you recently finish reading?

I finished reading The Opposite of Fate by Amy Tan yesterday. This is a book about the authors life and works. This was very good and I’ll definitaly be reading more of her books.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Next up off the shelf is Secret Diary of a Demented Housewife by Niamh Green. This is a chick lit book that i originally gave to my mum and she enjoyed it, so hoping i do too!

The Virgin Student – Virgin Student

26 Jun

Started – 10/6/12

Finished – 10/6/12

Format – Kindle e-book

Synopsis – “I’m a 21-year-old girl at Oxford University and I’ve just finished studying for my BA. Now I have one last mission to complete before I leave university – to lose my virginity.”

The tale of the Virgin Student became internationally renowned after an anonymous student advertised her virginity on the internet and then blogged her progress.

For nineteen days, her blog attracted attention from suitors, well-wishers, mortal enemies and the national press, until the story reached its climactic end, and Virgin Student vanished.

Available as a book for the first time, “The Virgin Student” includes all the charm of the original blog, re-worked and combined with previously unseen content.

My Thoughts – I downloaded this book as i thought that it would be a good book to read. This is a book made up of blog posts, a real blog about a girl who decided that she would loose her virginity by the end of her time at university. An easy feat you might think, but she only gave herself a matter of weeks into which to do it.

How did she find different men to go on dates with? Well she blogged about it and met people that she had met through the blog and also on dating sites. Now for me this i think is brave, as i wouldnt have had the confidence to date people over the internet, but thats down to personal preferance. I really enjoyed her really funny posts about the dates she went on and the people that she met.

It was a very short book, but at the same time it wasnt too short. As it was a book made up of exerpts i dont think it needed to be any longer. Also, its not an explict book. Sure there are sexual parts to the story as you would expect with a book like this, but not overly so.

I also enjoyed how hard she tried to keep her indentity under wraps and how the blog took over her life. This is something that i can identify with, because sometimes it feels like my blog takes over sometimes.

I enjoyed this book, but its not something that i would read again.

Rating – 3/5

The Literary Giveway Blog Hop!

23 Jun

The Literary blog hop is hosted by Leeswammes over on her blog. Between now and the 27th of June lots of blogs will all gather together and host givaways of books and bookish items. Check out the links at the bottom for the full list of blogs taking part.

My Givaway

I’m giving away an early reading copy of Apocalypse Cow by Michael Logan. i read this book earlier in the year and i loved it.

Synopsis –
Forget the cud. They want blood.

An outrageous and anarchic comic take on the zombie apocalypse – and joint winner of the first Terry Pratchett ‘Anywhere But Here, Anywhen But Now’ prize.

It began with a cow that just wouldn’t die. It would become an epidemic that transformed Britain’s livestock into sneezing, slavering, flesh-craving four-legged zombies.

And if that wasn’t bad enough, the fate of the nation seems to rest on the shoulders of three unlikely heroes: an abattoir worker whose love life is non-existent thanks to the stench of death that clings to him, a teenage vegan with eczema and a weird crush on his maths teacher, and an inept journalist who wouldn’t recognise a scoop if she tripped over one.

As the nation descends into chaos, can they pool their resources, unlock a cure, and save the world?

Three losers. Overwhelming odds. One outcome . . .

Yup, we’re screwed

Booking Through Thursday – Quoteable

21 Jun

Booking Through Thursday is a weekly bookish meme held over on the blog with the same name.

A while ago, I interviewed my readers for a change, and my final question was, “What question have I NOT asked at BTT that you’d love me to ask?” I got some great responses and will be picking out some of the questions from time to time to ask the rest of you. Like now.

Valentina asks:

Do you have a favorite quote from a book?

Now I know a lot of people will come up with some amazing and iconic literary quotes from some amazing books. I cant think of any quotes that are like that but i can think of the book that i have recently read that has the best opening line that i possibly have ever come across.

I write this sitting in the kitchen sink. That is, my feet are in it; the rest of me is on the draining board, which I have padded with our dog’s blanket and the tea cosy.’

This is a quote from I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith. I loved this book when i read it for the first time this year. I think this line just draws you in and makes you want to read more.

Around The World in Eighty Days – Jules Verne

20 Jun

Started – 30/5/12

Finished – 10/5/12

Format – Kindle e-book

Challenges – BCF June Reading Circle

1001 Books You Must Read

1001 Childrens Books You Must Read

Synopsis – Phileas Fogg is a man of habit, a Victorian gentleman who follows the same routine every day–until he accepts a wager that he can circle the globe within eighty days. Thus begins a hair-raising journey, in which Fogg’s obsession with his timetable is complemented by the dynamism and versatility of his French manservant, Passepartout, whose has a talent for getting into scrapes as the two dash across continents in a suspenseful race against time.

My Thoughts – This book was picked as the choice for the June Reading Circle on the BCF. It is a book that i always wanted to read but never got around too.

This book is aout Phileas Fogg, an excentric  London gentleman who loves his routine. His days follow the same pattern day in day out and he spends a huge ammount of time at the gentlemans club. It is here that he takes the bet to travel around the world in eighty days. Along with his french servant Passepartout he does just this. Now, along the way a policeman named Fix takes Fogg for a thief and follows him around the world in an attempt to arrest him and bring a thief to justice.

I was a little bit unsure about reading this book as i have a bit of a love/hate relationship with the classics. I sometimes struggle to get into them and really have a hard time reading them. However i really got into this book and once i picked it up i couldnt put it down.

There were a few parts that i struggled with, like would it have really been possible during those times. Nowadays this would be an easy feat but a hundred years ago or so, would this have actually worked? Also some of the language and attitudes and values in this book was a little bit hard to read but again this was a sign of the times when things like that happened, if not still unaceptable to say hard to stomach things.

This book is good, a must read for everyone, I was a little bit disappointed as i thought it had an hot air balloon central to the plot, but it didnt. I must stop watching films before i read the book!

Rating – 4/5
